This week we have been hanging out at mom and dad's having fun. While Jen has logged some serious time at the computer/scanner archiving old slides and pictures, the kids and I have been exploring the canyons that surround the thriving metropolis of Monroe. We went on a bike ride up to the gravel pits and instantly the kids ditched their bikes and started hiking the foothills in search of that "perfect rock." They found a vein of quartz that they were pretty excited about but more than anything, they just loved traipsing around the mountains. They took me to the edge of a super steep canyon and then Drew just started bombing down it with the girls following in close pursuit. It was so steep that they pretty much slid down on their bums the whole way causing mini landslides all the way down. All said and done, it was a lot of fun.
Today we went to Marysvale (sp?) canyon and rode our bikes up the bike path. It was a 13.5 mile round trip and overall, the kids hung in there without too much complaining. I tried to teach them the fine art of draftins so they could make the head wind less of an obstacle. Let's just say that they had moderate success with that. We stopped along the way and climbed, (what else?) more hills and rocks. We found a little cave that they thought was pretty cool. We had one scary moment when Megan's chain came off and she was heading downhill without brakes. She paniced and jumped off her bike and tumbled but she was tough and only cried for a couple of minutes. That canyon is a geological amusement park. It is amazing to see all the rock formations up there. We had a good time but all arrived back at the car hungry, thirsty, and tired.
